What can we learn from World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Initiated by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in 2003, World Day for Safety and Health at Work takes place annually on the 28th April. The international awareness day was initiated to promote safe, healthy, and sustainable working environments for all workers around the world. It achieves this by encroaching organisations, governments, and individuals to come together to promote safe and healthy working conditions and to take action to protect workers from harm.

Each year, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work has a specific theme that focuses on a particular aspect of occupational safety and health. The theme for 2023 was “a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work”.  Previous themes have included “Workplace Stress: A Collective Challenge” and “Safety and Health in the Use of Chemicals at Work.”

As an individual, there are several things you can do to promote the importance of safe and healthy working environments:

  • Educate yourself: Take some time to learn about the common hazards and risks associated with your occupation or industry. Knowing the risks can help you take steps to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Raise awareness: Talk to your colleagues and friends about the importance of workplace safety and health. Share resources and information on best practices for preventing accidents and injuries.
  • Advocate for change: If you notice unsafe conditions or practices in your workplace, speak up and report them to your employer or safety representative. Advocate for changes that will improve safety and health for all workers.
  • Participate in events: Look for events or activities in your community that are focused on promoting workplace safety and health. Participate in these events to learn more and show your support.
  • Take care of yourself: Remember that workplace safety and health begins with taking care of yourself. Take breaks, practice good ergonomics, and prioritise your physical and mental health to reduce the risk of workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Conduct a safety audit: If you are a manager or supervisor, conduct a safety audit of your workplace to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement. Take action to address any issues you identify and make sure all employees are trained on how to work safely.
  • Attend training or a webinar: Look for online training or webinars on workplace safety and health. These resources can provide valuable information on best practices and new developments in the field.
  • Share your experiences: Share your own experiences with workplace safety and health, whether it’s a close call or an injury you or a colleague experienced. By sharing your story, you can help raise awareness and encourage others to take workplace safety seriously.
  • Support organisations that promote workplace safety: Consider supporting organisations that work to promote workplace safety and health, whether through donations or volunteering. These organisations play an important role in advocating for safe and healthy working environments.
  • Take action outside of work: Remember that workplace safety and health is not just a workplace issue. Take action to promote safety and health in your community, whether it’s advocating for safe working conditions or supporting initiatives that promote health and well-being.
