Near-miss occurrences don’t seem overtly dangerous on the surface – after all, no one got hurt. But they are the biggest predictor of workplace incidents over the long-term. The connection has been borne out in multiple studies: more near-misses means a higher likelihood of incidents.
Identifying a near-miss often highlights a process weakness that if not corrected, could lead to dangerous hazards or injury in the future. In a nutshell, near-miss incidents bring to light significant opportunities to improve safety practice, that if embraced effectively, will lead to a reduction in workplace injuries and ill health.
There are several factors critical to the success of any near-miss reporting programme or campaign within an organisation ranging from ease of reporting to providing employees with a closed feedback mechanism to update them on remedial actions.
