Riskex Reflections on a Friday #22: Loneliness – look out for others over the festive period

The holiday season can be a particularly tough time for people who are already feeling lonely. Here are some ways you can help:

Reach out to those who may be feeling lonely:

  • Check in with friends and family who live alone or who may not have a lot of social connections. A simple phone call, text message, or email can make an enormous difference.
  • Invite someone to join you for a holiday meal or activity. For example, a dog walk in the park or a coffee shop meet.
  • Offer to help with holiday errands or activities. This could include anything from shopping and wrapping gifts to decorating the house.
  • Be a good listener. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is just be there for someone and listen to them talk about how they are feeling.

Volunteer your time:

  • Many charitable organisations need extra help during the holidays. You could volunteer to deliver meals, wrap gifts, or provide companionship to people who are alone.
  • There are also many opportunities to volunteer online or from home. This could include things like providing virtual companionship or helping with customer service.

Spread awareness about loneliness:

  • Talk to your friends and family about loneliness and how it can affect people.
  • Share information about resources that are available to people who are feeling lonely.
  • Advocate for policies and programs that address loneliness.

Remember, even small acts of kindness can make a substantial difference in the lives of people who are feeling lonely.
