Riskex Reflections on a Friday #18: Keep Safe on Remembrance Sunday
Remembrance Sunday is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. Remembrance does not glorify war and its symbol, the red poppy, is a sign of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.
For those who participate in Remembrance Day parades and events, the following tips are an aide memoire to keeping safe, wherever you are and whatever you are doing.
- Follow the rules and guidelines: Pay attention to any rules or guidelines provided by the event organisers. These may include designated viewing areas, parking instructions, and specific times for the event.
- Dress appropriately: Check the weather and dress warmly and comfortably, – its cold outside!
- Arrive early: Arriving early will help you find a good spot to view the parade and avoid the crowds that may form later. It also allows you time to get familiar with the surroundings.
- Stay hydrated and nourished: Bring some water and a snack if the parade is long, to ensure you stay hydrated and energised.
- Follow traffic and road closures: Be aware of road closures and traffic diversions related to the parade route. Plan your transportation accordingly and follow the instructions of traffic officers or signs.
- Keep an eye on your belongings: While Remembrance Day parades are generally safe, it’s still wise to keep an eye on your personal belongings
- Ensure children are properly supervised: There are several hazards to be aware of that are especially important if you are supervising children, particularly regarding road safety.
- Listen to announcements: Pay attention to any announcements or instructions provided by event organisers, security personnel, or law enforcement officers.
- Be aware of emergency exits and report suspicious activity: Familiarise yourself with the location of emergency exits or first aid stations if available. If you observe anything.
