The festive season is a time for joy and celebration. However, it’s also a period when the risk of fire incidents increases significantly. With homes adorned with festive decorations, Christmas trees, and an abundance of lights, it’s crucial to be aware of fire safety to ensure a safe and happy holiday season.

The importance of fire safety during the holidays

According to the latest statistics, fire and rescue services in England attended 622,173 incidents in the year ending March 2023, a 7.8% increase compared to the previous year. Of these, 178,737 were fires, marking a 17% increase. The festive season, with its unique hazards, contributes to this rise in fire incidents.

1.Christmas trees

Real Christmas trees can become highly flammable if they dry out. Ensure your tree is well-watered and placed away from heat sources like radiators and fireplaces.

2.The placement of your Christmas tree

Position your tree away from any potential fire hazards. Avoid placing it near materials that can catch fire easily.

    3.Festive lights

Ensure all lights are in good condition and replace any damaged ones. Use lights that have been tested and meet safety standards. Unplug all lights before bed.

      4.Handle decorations with care

Some decorations may be flammable, so avoid attaching decorations to lights or heaters as they could easily ignite.

5.Take care with plug sockets and extension leads

Prevent overloading your plug sockets or extension leads. Stick to the rule of one plug per socket to avoid electrical hazards. Always turn off plugs when they are not in use. If you are using a lot of extension cables, consider having more plug sockets installed in the room.

          6.Keep fire escape routes clear

Consider the easiest escape route in case of a fire and ensure it is unobstructed.

            7.Test your fire/ smoke alarm

Ensure your smoke alarms are working correctly by testing them monthly. Replace batteries if needed.

8.Make sure outdoor lights are safe too

When using outdoor electrical equipment, always employ an RCD (residual current device). This safety device instantly cuts off the power in case of a fault, potentially saving lives.

                9.Firework safety

                    11.Cooking Fires

The kitchen is a hotspot for fires, especially during the holidays when cooking activities increase. Never leave cooking unattended and be cautious when using deep fryers or other high-heat appliances.

12.Keep Candles Away from Flammable Items

Place candles on stable surfaces, far from curtains, trees, or decorations. Consider using battery-operated LED candles.

By following these fire safety tips and being aware of the risks, you can help ensure that your festive celebrations are safe and enjoyable. Remember, a little caution can go a long way in preventing fire incidents and protecting your loved ones.
