Tips for Maximising Training Effectiveness
Statistics on confidence in first aid training
First aid training is vital for workplace safety, but confidence levels among employees who receive it can vary.
Most adults would not be able to save a life in a first aid emergency. A British Red Cross statistic shows that up to 59% of deaths caused by injuries across the UK could have been prevented if first aid had been administered before medical services arrived.
In another study by St John Ambulance found just 29% of those surveyed, said they felt ‘very confident’ in first aid – and St John Ambulance would like to see this improved on.
Frequency of Refresher Training:
Employers are legally required to ensure their first aiders are competent and maintain their skills throughout the three years in which their certificates are valid.
The Health and Safety Executive strongly recommends that first aiders attend a refresher session once every year during this three year period.

Tips to Get the Most Out of First Aid Training
Maximising the effectiveness of first aid training can increase confidence and preparedness. Here are some strategies for both organisations and individuals:
1.Practice realistic scenarios:
- Practical, hands-on experience with lifelike simulations helps employees better understand the steps involved and prepares them for real-life situations. If possible, add stressors or unexpected elements to simulate real emergencies.
2. Consider organising regular refresher courses:
- Repeating training sessions every 12-18 months helps retain skills and build confidence. Many training providers offer shorter “refresher” courses designed specifically for those who have already completed initial training.
3. Focus on core skills and common situations:
- Emphasise the most critical and frequently needed skills, such as CPR, controlling bleeding, and recognising signs of choking or heart attacks. Targeting these areas builds confidence in the most likely scenarios.
4. Promote a culture of first aid awareness:
- Reinforce first aid principles regularly through workplace posters, quick drills, or brief review sessions. A supportive culture can empower employees to feel more confident and prepared to help.
5. Provide easy-to-access resources:
- Keep first aid information readily available, so that employees can review steps as needed. This helps them refresh their memory in emergency situations, reducing hesitation.
By investing in regular, engaging, and practical first aid training, organisations can ensure employees feel empowered and prepared to act confidently in emergency situations.
