Winter fire safety in the workplace
As we enter the run-up to Christmas, here is a quick reminder of the top workplace fire risks associated with the festive season – and guidance on how to keep your workforce and business property safe. As you write your December to-do list, make sure that reviewing your Fire Risk Assessments and Fire Safety Policies is on it – and that they take account of the Fire Risks below.
Christmas Tree Lights. Ensure you carry out a thorough visual inspection of the condition of fairy lights to check for broken bulbs, frayed wires and broken sockets before using them. Also ensure that all lights are switched off when you leave the office. This video is a sombre reminder of just how easily and quickly a Christmas tree can catch fire. Ensure all Christmas decorations are flame-retardant.
Plug in Heaters. While these appliances have their place, portable heaters are more likely to cause fires than fixed heating systems, so use the latter wherever possible. Like all electrical appliances, it is important to carry out regular PAT testing and visual checks on cables and sockets. And never leave a portable heater unsupervised when switched on.
Naked Flames. According to the Home office, there are more than 1,000 candle fires each year in the UK. Scarily, the number of Britons killed by candle fires has more than doubled over recent years. Christmas time is synonymous with candlelight, but naked flames are best avoided in the workplace – opt for battery-operated ones instead.
