Fines of Nearly £24M Issued in 2020 for Health and Safety Breaches

Recent analysis by health and safety consultancy Arinite found that the average fine for a health and safety breach in 2020 was £106,984 whereas, according to them, it would only cost £44,214 per year for a small organisation to meet what is required by law.

This translates to the cost of a fine being a whopping 142% higher than the cost of compliance. Of course, the importance of organisations maintaining compliance with health and safety regulation goes way beyond the fiscal aspects – keeping workers, contractors and other stakeholders safe and well whilst at work should sit at the heart of health and safety management processes.

The impact of a robust health and safety management system brings about:

  • Fewer accidents and hazards in the workplace
  • Lower employee absence (linked to a more engaged workforce with fewer work-related illnesses and injuries)
  • Reduced instances of litigation and insurance claims
  • Increased productivity because employees are healthier, happier and better motivated
  • Better management of reputational risk

There are many aspects involved in maintaining compliance with health and safety law and the Riskex health and safety software platform, AssessNET can help you to manage these.  Some of the basic processes managed within AssessNET are outlined below:
